Cedarcrest Park Splash Pad

Located 20 minutes south of our Minneapolis headquarters, Bloomington, Minnesota is home to Cedarcrest Park. The splash pad at the park is a vibrant community amenity free for public use. Other aspects present include a playground and multi-use sport court. Cedarcrest shares a parking lot with United Christian Academy and Cedar Valley Church, both of which utilize the space by spending recess and break times playing at the park.

The splash pad itself is unfenced. Bike and shoe traffic are both common and leafy trees line the perimeter. This means that the splash pad is almost always coming into contact with leaves, sticks, dirt, sand, gravel, and wood chips on a regular basis. And when it’s not in use during winter, the harsh Minnesotan snow and ice covers it.

In 2023, Bloomington chose to replace their existing Life Floor surface, originally installed in 2017, with a new Life Floor design. Our team collaborated closely with the city to trial new products that weren’t fully public to the market yet including Murals and a prototype Plank shape.

This playful refresh showcases a pond-themed design with a little bit of everything we often say Life Floor is capable of across two main zones: the splash area and the boardwalk. Planks on one side create a boardwalk pathway to follow and echo what families might experience when going on a walk at a nearby nature preserve. On the other side, blue colors not only spark imagination and complete the pond motif, but also visually signal to guests where to stand under the bucket to get sprayed during activation. Lily Pad Inlays are interspersed with Waterlily Inlays to create a hopping-style game where kids can imagine they have to hop icon to icon to keep from plunging into a blue pond. Three smaller sections of Murals show how this product can be combined with standard designs to bring playfulness and character design into the space.
