Introducing Planks: A New Way to Design with Life Floor

Planks have long been a cornerstone of design in both natural and built environments. From classic boardwalks leading to sun-soaked shores to the rich textures of wooden trails and ship decks, plank-style surfaces have always invited exploration. Their linear form naturally draws the eye, creating pathways, rhythm, and flow, qualities that translate beautifully to aquatic design.

At Life Floor, we've always admired the timeless aesthetic of wood-inspired surfaces. In fact, our early 24" x 24" tiles once featured a plank-like texture that became a favorite for theming. When we evolved our surface technology to introduce more advanced slip-resistant textures, those tiles were retired, but the demand never faded. Designers, operators, and partners have consistently asked for a way to bring back the look of planks while retaining the safety and performance Life Floor offers.

Why Planks?

The call for planks has been especially strong from our cruise ship partners. Onboard environments often rely on flooring that evokes natural wood while meeting the most rigorous standards for slip resistance, cushioning, and heat dissipation. Until now, options on the market have often required compromising on safety or comfort. Life Floor Planks close that gap, offering a safe, soft, and durable alternative that retains the warmth and elegance of traditional wood.

Beyond the cruise industry, the possibilities are far-reaching. Resorts can use planks to elevate pool decks and boardwalks, creating a sophisticated, natural look. On the other end of the spectrum, parks and aquatic centers can use them to create immersive themed play environments, from pirate ship decks to forest trails to colorful "plank paths" through imaginative splash zones.

Introducing Life Floor Planks

Our new planks are designed to integrate seamlessly with the rest of the Life Floor product family. Sized at 6" x 48", they align perfectly with our 24" x 24" squares and 12" x 24" rectangles, making it easy to mix and match shapes in your next design.

Each plank features our NSF/ANSI/CAN 50 Certified Ripple texture, delivering the same exceptional slip resistance, comfort underfoot, and heat dissipation that define every Life Floor installation. While the Ripple texture adds visual softness and tactile safety, we hope to develop a slip-resistant wood-grain texture in the future to further enhance the theme of our plank tiles.

Planks will most commonly be installed in a range of tans and browns to evoke the warmth of natural wood, but they’re available in all Life Floor colors for designers ready to explore more vibrant palettes. Whether you want a teak-inspired deck, a coral boardwalk, or a playful rainbow “pier,” the creative opportunities are endless.

Design Inspiration: Where Planks Come to Life

Early design renderings from our team highlight just how versatile planks can be. Imagine:

  • Cruise decks that echo the beauty of real timber while staying cool underfoot.

  • Resort walkways that flow seamlessly from pools to cabanas with elevated design continuity.

  • Splash pads and play zones themed as pirate ships, jungle paths, or nature trails, where planks become the story beneath every step.

  • Sports and recreation spaces that use linear planks to create directional patterns, lanes, or game zones.

Whether your goal is luxury or imagination, Life Floor planks bring a new dimension to surface design, bridging safety, style, and storytelling.
