Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre

Project Type: Splash Pad

Location: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

This $63M aquatic center redevelopment opened in November 2023 and received the 6 Star Green Star Award for design. This award reflects global leadership in sustainable design with the highest rating presented in accordance with the Green Building Council Australia. According to the council, this award “is reserved for highly efficient buildings fully powered by renewables while addressing a significant number of environmental and social issues while contributing to the community.”

The vibrant indoor water play amenity conveys a distinct, bold statement with its soothing colors and unique use of linear design elements achieving the overall vision that Brett Diprose of Warren and Mahoney imagined for the space in collaboration with Greenshoot Consulting, the Wrundjeri Elders, and Darebin City Council. Life Floor safety surfacing complements Waterplay’s spray fixtures and creates pathways throughout the spray elements for kids to jump between.

Additionally, Inlays from the Australia + New Zealand set are interspersed throughout the project to add interest and engage guests. These features demonstrate Life Floor’s creative flexibility to elevate play value while achieving the overall vision that Warren and Mahoney Architects imagined for the space.
